Introduction to Sailing

Miramar Yacht Club offers Annual Introduction to Sailing Sessions

Sailing is a sport unlike any other. It can be enjoyed at any age, it offers equal opportunities to men and women, while race and social status are irrelevant. Sailing brings challenge and satisfaction, fulfillment and adrenaline-surging excitement. It offers a sense of freedom and independence that, once experienced often leads to healthy addiction. For those who catch that sailing bug, there is rarely any cure.

The formal route to training is to find a sailing school, spend a small fortune, and discover that you learn nothing at the end of last session. The other, more sensible way to learn is to join a group of people that already sails.

It's become our club's tradition to host one day sailing lesson for people who've never tried sailing. Many people think of sailing a boat as of something dangerous, expensive, inaccessible and difficult to get into or learn. Little do they know that there is a place in Brooklyn where everyone is welcome to sail, learn and enjoy this beautiful sport. So, let your dream become a reality. Spend a day with dreamers like yourself, learning sailing. If you like it sign up for our special "Seek&Sail".

Who should attend the class? If you agree to any of the following statements, this class is for you.

  • I have never been sailing.

  • I’ve been sailing only couple of times, but I couldn’t tell you the difference between a close tack and a broad reach.

  • I’m not interested in taking a sailing class at this time, but I would like to know enough to be helpful on a sailboat.

  • I’ve enrolled in a basic sailing class, but I’d like to get a solid head start before my first on-the-water lesson.

  • I am 14 years old or older.

What is the class schedule?

  • The classroom session starts at 10:00 and last for about two - two and a half hours,

  • Lunch and social hour, from noon to 13:30,

  • After lunch two hours you will spend practicing sailing in the Bay (subject to weather condition)

Due to increased demand, we at Miramar Yacht Club decided to host Intro to Sailing Class not just once, as we traditionally do in May. Organizers of the class have made arrangements with the management of the club to host this class three times:

  • May 9th, 2020 - Class,

  • May 23rd, 2020 - Class,

  • June 6th, 2020 - Class, and

  • June 7th - Seek & Sail Session

However, because of the unfortunate events and uncertainty related to COVID-19 pandemic this schedule might change.

Please revisit this page for latest updates. In the event of cancellation all students will be fully refunded.

What to expect from the class?

After completing this one day course (about 5 hours), you’ll understand:

  • how a sailboat works,

  • the common commands used to steer one,

  • some basic sailing terminology,

  • basic boating knots,

  • basics of boating safety and weather.

The best part of the days is, of-course, is active participation and experiencing magic of sailing.

"I took the class, now what?"Another great tradition of our club is annual Seek & Sail Session; when all students, friends and their friends come together and sail with our captains. After few hours of sailing in the best sailing area of New York all participants are gathering at the club for a party. What you do after the party is entirely up to you, but we are hoping you will join us and keep the magic of sailing going.
