Our commitments

Miramar Yacht Club was founded in 1932 by sailors who had been excluded from other boating clubs in the area because they were Jewish. From the beginning, Miramar was created as a place where people who loved the water could find acceptance, fellowship, and a shared commitment to sailing and boating. Today, we are sailors, boaters, families, and neighbors from many different backgrounds and traditions dedicated to sharing our enjoyment of life on the water. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. These commitments reflect the standards we strive to uphold together as a community and embody the spirit of our Constitution, By-Laws, and House Rules.

Respect and Dignity

Every person at Miramar will be treated with dignity and respect. We are committed to maintaining a club where all feel safe and welcome regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, socioeconomic background, political affiliation, family status, or sailing experience. We do not tolerate harassment, intimidation, bullying, slurs, or conduct that demeans or excludes others. As a club founded by people who experienced exclusion, we recognize a special responsibility to welcome new members and remain mindful of our own assumptions about who belongs.

Shared Spaces and Community Life

The clubhouse, the Gore, the docks, and the yard belong to all of us. We clean up after ourselves, care for shared property, and leave spaces ready for the next person. No part of the club should feel permanently claimed by any individual or group. Miramar is a Corinthian club sustained by the volunteer efforts of its members. We each share responsibility for maintaining and improving the club for future generations.

Guests, Sailing, and Stewardship

We strive to be gracious hosts. We welcome guests and make newcomers feel included at the club and on the water. We are committed to mentoring new sailors, supporting youth sailing, making racing accessible, and passing knowledge across generations. We also recognize our responsibility as stewards of Sheepshead Bay and commit to protecting and improving our local waters and waterfront.

Safety and Responsibility

Safety is a shared responsibility. We operate vessels carefully, follow maritime rules and club safety procedures, and look out for one another both on and off the water. Alcohol is part of many club traditions, and we commit to celebrating responsibly, especially around children, the waterfront, and vessels. Illegal substances are not permitted on club property or aboard vessels.

Conflict and Accountability

Disagreements are inevitable in any healthy community. We commit to addressing concerns directly, respectfully, and in good faith whenever possible. When direct conversation is not sufficient, concerns may be brought to the Bridge, the Committee on Community Life, or the Board of Governors. No person will face retaliation for raising a concern in good faith. Our Constitution provides formal procedures for review, hearings, graduated responses, and appeal.

These commitments are a statement of our shared values and aspirations as a community. They are intended to guide our conduct, strengthen our fellowship, and help ensure that Miramar remains a welcoming home on the water for generations to come.
