Coastal Navigation Class
ASA 105 Coastal Navigation Course at Miramar
On Jan 6-7, Steve Card, owner of New York Sailing Center (hosted here at Miramar), will be conducting a coastal navigation course at the Club. This is for anyone who wants to get all the skills needed to safely navigate inland and near coastal waters. There are no prerequisites. No prior sailing or navigation experience is needed, although it's helpful to have some boating or paddling experience for perspective.
Quick stats:
9:00 to 4:00 with coffee & lunch breaks
High quality plotting tools and chart included (and kept by students)
Companion textbook authored by Steve Card from NY Sailing Center
Chart basics all the way through current set & drift corrections
ASA 105 Coastal Nav exam scheduled later (in person or remotely)
Students will come away with strong situational awareness for all future boating, which is great for day sails when formal navigation isn't needed. But, when it is, such as a bareboat charter cruise in unfamiliar waters, all the skills will be there to plot courses, do position fixes, correct for current, and even deal with tricky issues like compass deviation. The techniques have withstood the test of time, and work around the world. Plus, we cover GPS and lat/lon fixes because even though one shouldn't over-rely on it, it's foolish to not use it.
As we're right on the water, students will also learn to take hand-held compass bearings and plot them in real life!
The normal tuition for the in-person nav courses is $475. Miramar members enjoy 20% off this rate and pay only $380. Four spots will be held in reserve for Miramar members through Sunday December 10, and thereafter be first come/first served. Payment can be by major credit or debit card, PayPal, or Zelle.
